“Invitation Only Murder” – a Lucy Stone Mystery by Leslie Meier

This latest entry, the 26th, in the endearing Lucy Stone Mystery series was not more of the same holiday themed home spun cozy, instead it was more of a thriller than a malice domestic mystery.  I literally could not put it down because the suspense becomes riveting, what begins as a typical cozy gradually develops into a rather dark and frightening tale.

It is a classic mystery plot, a murder on a remote island off the coast of Maine.  Lucy is a guest of a financial investment CEO billionaire and is there to report for the town weekly, the Pennysaver, on their ‘off the grid’ back to the land, environmentally sensitive lifestyle with all the amenities of the 1850’s! “Hounds of the Basket Stitch” – A Black Sheep & Company Mystery by Anne Canadeo

This was a ‘new to me’ series and though I am normally wary of knitting and crafting mysteries this one enveloped me like a cozy scarf with its down to earth comfort and sensible-ness.   The mystery revolves around two sister, one a traumatized young woman, Rose who suffered severe head injuries in a car accident and her older sister Holly who runs the nursery on their farm which they inherited from their parents.  One of the Black Knitters Club members is a godmother to Holly and asks that the club visit them at home to teach the basics of knitting as a calming hobby that is therapeutic.

Soon thereafter their nursery burns down because of arson and Holly rescued but has  severe smoke inhalation injuries and is kept sedated in the hospital till her lungs can heal and so cannot provide any details on who the attacker and arsonist was.  Rose is unable because of her condition to answer many questions on what happened and could possibly be considered guilty.
